A plain glossary of the betting words used in Zambian chat groups and shops, matched to what they mean on a bet slip and in the cashier.

01

Why a glossary matters here

Half the questions people ask about betting in Zambia are really questions about vocabulary. A word used in a shop, a word in a chat group and a word on the slip can all describe the same thing.

Getting them straight is cheaper than learning them one disappointment at a time.

02

Becha, bet, stake

Becha is the everyday word for placing a bet. On the slip the same action splits into two numbers: the stake, which is the money you put in, and the potential return, which includes it.

Profit is the return minus the stake. A lot of arguments about what a slip "paid" are really a confusion between return and profit.

03

Slip, coupon, ticket

The slip is the list of selections before you confirm. Once confirmed it becomes a ticket with a reference, and that reference is the only record that counts.

If a price changed between building the slip and confirming it, the ticket shows what the operator actually accepted. Screenshots of the slip prove nothing.

04

Single, multi, acca

A single is one selection. A multi or acca joins several, multiplying the odds and requiring every leg to win.

Each added leg multiplies the operator’s margin as well as the price. [Multibet](/multibet/) sets out what that costs.

05

Odds, margin, and what a price means

Decimal odds describe a chance: 2.00 is one in two, 4.00 is one in four. Converting them into percentages and adding the outcomes shows the operator’s cut on that market.

[Odds explained](/odds-explained/) walks through it with examples from local fixtures.

06

Cash out, void, push

Cash out ends a bet early at a quoted price. A voided leg is one the operator settles at 1.00, usually because a fixture was abandoned, and the rest of the slip stands.

A push is a whole-number line landing exactly on the number, and the stake comes back. These three words explain most unexpected settlements.

07

Bonus, wagering, free bet

A bonus is promotional balance with conditions. Wagering is how much turnover is required before anything from it can be withdrawn.

A free bet returns winnings only, not the stake. All three are explained on [the bonus page](/bonus/) and [free bets](/free-bets/).

08

Words that should make you stop

Fixed, sure, guaranteed, formula, VIP code. Each of them appears in chat groups attached to a request for money, and none of them describes anything a licensed operator offers.

If a word arrives with a price tag and a promise, the word is the product. [Betting strategy](/betting-strategy/) covers why those offers exist.

Questions, answered

What does becha mean?

It is the everyday word for placing a bet. On the slip the same action is split into a stake and a potential return.

What is the difference between return and profit?

The return includes your stake; the profit does not. Most arguments about what a slip paid come from mixing the two.

What is a voided leg?

A selection the operator settles at odds of 1.00, usually because the fixture was abandoned. The rest of the slip still stands.

What does push mean?

A whole-number line landing exactly on the number, so the stake is returned rather than won or lost.

Why do chat groups talk about fixed matches?

Because the word sells. It usually arrives attached to a request for payment, and it describes nothing a licensed operator offers.
